Well, where to begin in this review of 2007? I wanted this post to deal with issues of the past year…(oh yeah HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!) then I said “hey this is my blog, I’ll deal with me. So after a little thought I compromised and I will do both.
I gave you my Cleveland Sports look back a few posts ago (the Browns didn’t make the playoffs, even at 10-6) , so I will skip that, but I guess you can say the biggest stories started with Barry Bonds passing Hank Aaron as Home Run King. This story was partnered with Bond’s steroid use “allegedly”… oh wait their was a report “The Mitchell Report” that blew the whistle on other MLB players, one of which was the great Roger Clements….crazy. But don’t get too disappointed, ‘roids are only used in baseball….oh wait, Marion Jones finally confessed and told us she used performance enhancing drugs to win her Olympic medals….wow! Players weren’t the only one’s cheating, there was a NBA scandal with ref’s calling games unfairly…who knew?
Staying in sports, these next few stories crossed racial lines as well. You first had the Duke Lacrosse team (a few individuals) being charged for rape of a adult dancer. The dancer was black and…well we’re talking about Duke Lacrosse… anyway…the team was let off, due to lack of evidence I believe, but their lives were torn apart. Many high profile black leaders did what unfortunately others have done to us…screamed guilty until due process…not good. Well racial tensions again exploded when Don Imus called the woman’s basketball team at Rutgers’ nappy headed “gardening tools”. He lost a lot of his sponsors and was taken off the radio…He is, as I type, back on the radio. And let’s not forget about OJ Simpson. His trial ten years ago divided this country down the middle, black and white…now he is back in the news trying to steal “recover” his property. So again one side is “good for him, he should have been gone ten years ago” the other “leave him alone”.
The biggest “fall from grace” in sports would have to be Mick Vick…enough said.
Off the topic of sports we have Presidential campaigning that started a year before the actual election.
When asked the question, why a fifth of Americans could not locate the United States on a world map…Ms Teen South Carolina replied “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as, uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.”…crazy
Google, FaceBook, iPhone, & YouTube changed the tech world this year. There was a huge beef recall, we have Senators asking for Pastors of Mega Churches across the country to release their Tax filings. A NASA Astronaut driving cross country, in a diaper no less, because of a love triangle, Cleveland was the poorest city along with having the highest foreclosure rate. Oil prices sky high, Reality TV getting faker by the minute, Politicians playing foot tapping in restroom stalls and lest not forget our own Dennis Kucinich told us he saw UFO’s.
Sadly there was a local school shooting at Cleveland’s Success Tech Academy…
…as well as the Virginia Tech tragedy.
Talk about a racial divide…Let’s not forget about the Jena 6.
It has been quite a year, and I know I have missed many news worthy stories…these were just some that stuck out to me. I’m going to cut short this post. I’ll post my side of 2007 later.
